24 HOUR CINEMA

Only a few minutes from Nottingham City Centre, The 24 Hour Cinema runs throughout the day and throughout the night. Located in the city centre, accessable to anyone, it brings alternative film choices such as cult classics and those films you ‘never got around to watching‘.

The building includes four clear sections. The first section is the man reception and ticket desk which sits beside a generous exhibition area for digital artists and also university art students to exhibit their work. The second section is the cinema, with it’s tunnel leading through connecting the exhibition area with the cafe, which is the third section of the building, and also acting as an exit for those in the cinema who wish to leave without interfering with the cinema’s large panels (swiveling doors).

The panels are made of particle board, lightweight but strong and dense, lined with acoustic seals to lock in the noise. They rotate at a centre-point and open before and after a film is screened. This opens up the building, letting light flow through the doors. The panels also act as a screen themselves, with a media facade projection detailing film times, trailers and promotional material.

The cafe level looks onto the media facade panels, acting as a screen that may not only show trailers for films but project almost anything. This provides extra usage for the media facades on both sides, acting as additional screens for large events where the capacity of the main cinema section is full. There are toilet facilities underneath, including a disabled access lift which may also act as a means of lifting goods to the cafe. Additional seating is available on the ground floor as this section of the building acts as a rest space whilst waiting for a screening, or used in events hosted by the 24 Hour Cinema. The cafe/bar is open throughout the day which acts as an attractive area to study, socialise and thrive in a creative environment.

An app which acts as a loyalty card makes it possible for visitors to be offered drinks/food/popcorn combined with movie tickets. Including information on the resident artists to exhibit in the first section. This gives visitors a feel of the whole building, engaging in a wholeheartedly creative environment. The visitors to the 24 Hour Cinema are offered an app which they can download, where they can easily request a screening of something they wish to watch, book a seat or several seats for groups and easily pay through PayPal.
This means that when they arrive to the screening, all they have to do is scan their phones on arrival to gain access to the cinema. People may watch marathons, staying for long lengths of time. People are encouraged to, if working with screens as they watch a film to be seated at the back of the seating, against the wall not to distract from the light of the projection. Anyone is welcome at the cinema although it is likely that themed nights, weekends and annual events will occur where large marathons of films and TV shows are screened deeming the venue a hot spot for students and young creatives and thinkers. The large box sits above the tunnel which holds the projector and other equipment. There is also a stage featured in front of the screen, which encourages lectures and talks to be hosted.
